BRAC!

Posted on March 20, 2008. Filed under: BRAC |

What was your response to Tuesday’s announcement that the Base Realignment and Closure business plan was finally signed, bringing over 1,000 jobs to China Lake?
What does this mean to the community? What do we need to do next?

We must wait and see if this pans out or is hoopla.
It is hoped that this bunch of newcomers will be smart people and of a bent to associate with the Ridgecrestians. Possibly even with the Tronians. If they really are smart people they’ll do all their shopping for Big Ticket items in Palmdale. Let’s hope they’re not TOO smart.

People who have webtv Internet access should’nt be casting stones in glass houses. But seriously,Ridgecrest will only get incoming monies thru either subtrefuge or honesty. f Ridgecrest wants big bucks then advertise this Place thru esoterics. There IS value in living here but the self-appointed bigwigs who think they run this berg first have to drop their silly pretentses. Ridgecrest never was nor will be a tourist attraction. No ski resort here,No Disneyland. Even the drugs and prostitutes have been pretty much driven away. So what’s left? Answer that question and outsiders with money will flock to Ridgecrest in droves. Answer to question is THERE’S NOTHING HERE. Nothing but one thru effort will discover. And thru discovering find deep solace from the outside world. Duringmy lifetime I have known kings and other potentates. I can tell you that after all’s said and done;yachts,Ferraris, etc purchased they one and all return to craving the littlest of things. These smallest of things are of the greatest value.

That was a totally nasty thing to say. Fred and I may fight like cats and dogs online but that is disagreement issues and never once has either of us made an obscene “wish” as you just did.

A Useless Load? This useless load…as YOU put it… has given expensive life-saving equipment to the fire Dept…he has added countless precious items to our museum and contibuted heavily to our children, not to mention many individuals that he has given a helping hand to.

Try looking past some of the nasty remarks to what he has done for others. Anyone who reads these pages know that he has the capacity to make me raging mad but I believe that angry or not…I give credit where credit is due!

Useless Load? And you hope he kills himself? Now that is disgusting!

Thank you for removing offensive content, DI. Now we can get down to basics and at least argue on topic. LOL

What kind of jobs will come to China Lake? Totally professional? Paraprofessional? Who will be filling them? Are there jobs for young people who already live in your valley? Are the jobs already filled by people who are transfering in? Will the influx of jobs inspire more businesses for Ridgecrest…particularly in the intertainment fields? How soon will all this happen…before or after 2011?

Nosy libraryladies want to know these things.

to Ruthie: I apologize if I’ve upset you. I’m merely dealing with reality not wishfull illusion. That a thousand new jobs for Ridgecrest automatically transforms itself into big bucks for the locals we’ll wait and see if happens. The first thing newcomers to this region coming from affluent areas notice most is that the people here from the top down exist in
a self-constructed fantasy. You and I are on wavelengths. You’re radio and I’m television.

Fred, on this topic I really am not on the cutting edge of knowledge. LOL. My questions about the BRAC influence in Ridgecrest are real “I wanna know” questions. There are no need for apologies. You have said nothing to upset me…yet! When you do I will probably enjoy responding back to you. LOL

I was upset earlier by a post that was removed and I reacted to it in a manner that was not on topic so I should apologize.

BTW, I LIKE my fantasies. :)

to Ruthie: Fantasies are something-more than meets the eye. Fantasies take us beyond the ordinary, beyond the status quo into realms of possibility. All things begin with conceptualization and go on from there to fruition/accomplishment. Thus explains Einstein and his theories. All of today’s wonders stemmed from dream of what if? It is no accident that America’s ancient indian culture and that of Australia’s similar ancient culture and that of Africa’s have this acknowledgement of dreamworld intimately connected to realworld. The best of humanity can be found in it’s memberships’ fantasies.

I request that Fred and Ruthie both contact and make appointments with Dr Kavorkian..

to Edward: Today’s my birthday. I turned 62 today. And you want me and Ruthie to commit suicide? That’s interesting and I wonder if your comment is reflective of this desert populace. If it is it explains why Big Money avoids Ridgecrest like the plauge. Money means smart people and smart people won’t relocate to Hicktown.

In case all my highly pertinent and on topic questions got lost in the deluge of “Well-Wishers” I will post them again. I really would like to hear serious responses. In my philosophy class I learned that wisdom comes not in how many questions you can answer but in the questions you can ask.( I just threw that in so everyone will know I am truly a wise guy…I mean a wise woman)

Happy Belated Birthday, Fred. Remember…it is wisely said, “Do not sweat the petty stuff (like Edward) or pet the sweaty stuff (eeeewwwww probably also like)”

Ruthie,
Down deep inside you know that the jobs will be transfers to China Lake. Our youth will
be waiting on them in the motels and
resturaunts. Happy Belated Birthday Fred.

to t-willikers: You hit it pretty good. The best Ridgecrest can hope for is the new hires at the base will spend monies in town. I would advise local businesses to ramp up for this. I remember Long Beach,Ca during the 1950s/60s. Now THAT was a place for a sailor to lose his pay fast. Plenty of bars, hookers and the wonderful Long Beach Pike amusement park. I used to get buttered corn on a stick there and hot dogs. I’d throw dimes onto glass plates to win goldfish in bowls. Then there was the Freak Show, guys guessing your weight, real shooting galleries with real guns and bullets before such things became politically incorrect.
A big ferris wheel, penny arcades and that funky smell which always says people are having fun here. Lotta money can be made off the China Lake hirees but you gotta know how to do it.

Fred and Ms T…does that mean you do not expect the transfers to make their homes here? When all of this brac talk first started, I wondered if people would not commute by carpool or vanpool because they…at least older ones…would be reluctant to give up established homes, but now that we are talking $4 and possibly $5 a gallon…I don’t know. What is your opinions? What options are open?

to Ruthie: I’d expect the tranfers might buy houses in Trona but not Ridgecrest unless Ridgecrest can match our home prices. As fo gas prices,if I lived in Trona and worked at China Lake I’d buy a motorcycle. Tranfers can buy a nice house in Trona for the cost of an automobile. Understand that the Ponzi scheme housing market drove prices to three times what the houses were really
worth. That’s why I sold my house/property in Orange County at the height of the housing scam then moved to Trona and bought a 3 bedroom house for $24,000. Trona’s the bes deal in all of California and surrounding states
for buying homes. America’s entering a recession of massive proportions. Smart people will respond accordingly.

I’ll believe it when I see it. This is suppose to save the govenment money, but the thing is it’s going to cost the government more money in building offices, etc. to bring all these people in. If that happens then there’s a possible reduction in force RIF schedule for the early 2010’s.

Wonderful to have employment coming.
I hope we are going to have some high school
entry level positions. Many do not have degrees
and need on the job training. If they open it to locals, it will be a great opportunity for this community to shape and to serve its people. Small business’ will profit from increased traffic. Great move for our community in many ways.

I hope the head honchos running China Lake milirary base warn the incoming crowd to beware of the locals.
This is SOP thruout America and the world wherever one of our bases are. I mean, all I’m hearing from the locals is “Whoopee, there’s a buncha suckers coming and we’re all gonna get rich”. I recently parked at #395 next to the Ridgecrest offramp sign and looked downhill. I’ve seen squirrels build better-looking habitats. My bet is the new China Lake hirees will avoid Ridgecrest like the plauge.

Hi, just perusing this site and came across this blog. I will be moving to Ridgecrest next month and am looking to secure a decent-paying position. One year is the amount of time I plan to stay, in order to save enough money to buy a home back in LA county. As for my education, I have a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and eventually will be attending medical school. I also am a single mother pregnant with my second child (the two main reasons I desperately need to save money). My father has lived in Ridgecrest for the past 6 years, and I visit him with my son frequently. To be perfectly honest, I did not want to move up there, and was discouraged at the seeming polarity of residents. But after much thought and discussion with my dad, I have decided it is worth taking a chance…hell, I may end up loving it there and not want to leave.

to Jennifer: I recommend looking into renting a house in Trona. Cost would probably be half that of Ridgecrest.
The true medical centers for this region are Palmdale and Lancaster. But Ridgecrest has extensive medical facilities, too. You have saleable skills beyond many of the local residents. So I doubt you’ll have problems finding employment.

R/C aint so bad but the increase in housing costs due to BRAC is ridiculous. You’ll do far better to move to Trona.

to t-willikers: I am having a great time in Trona.
If you’re from classy Orange County,Ca like I am this place is a hoot. The angst here is mind-blowing. Never a dull moment. It’s like jumping into a time machine going circa a hundred years ago to the Twilight Zone episode ‘Last Stop at Willoughby’. Or the Spencer Tracy 1950s movie ‘Bad Day at Black Rock’.
